AI search for law firms: how to get cited by ChatGPT and AI Overviews

By George Levett · Updated · 9 min read

The short answer

AI engines cite sources they can parse, verify and quote. For a law firm that means an unambiguous entity (consistent name, address, SRA number and people across the web), self-contained answers near the top of each page, valid structured data, and corroboration from third-party sources the model already trusts.

Citation is the new ranking

An AI answer names a handful of sources. Being eleventh is the same as being invisible, and there is no second page to be on. The upside is that the shortlist is chosen on different criteria to the blue links, so a smaller firm with clearer content can appear above a larger one.

Be an unambiguous entity

Models resolve who you are by cross-referencing. If your firm's name, address, phone number and SRA number differ across your site, the Law Society directory, Google and Companies House, you are harder to resolve and easier to skip.

Fix the inconsistencies first. It is dull work and it does more than anything else on this list.

Write answers that can be lifted whole

Put a two-to-four sentence direct answer near the top of every commercial page, phrased so it stands alone with no surrounding context. If a model has to assemble your answer from four paragraphs, it will use a competitor who wrote one.

Structure it so it can be read without guessing

Organization or LegalService, Person for each solicitor, FAQPage for genuine questions, BreadcrumbList for hierarchy. Keep the markup true to what is on the page - invented markup gets ignored at best.

Serve real HTML, not an empty shell hydrated by JavaScript. Several AI crawlers do not execute JS at all, so a client-rendered site is simply blank to them.

Get corroborated elsewhere

Commentary in trade and regional press, directory profiles, and genuine reviews all give a model independent confirmation that you exist and are credible. This is where digital PR earns its place - not for the link alone, but for the mention.

Can you guarantee our firm gets cited by ChatGPT?

No, and nobody honest can. Model outputs vary by prompt, user and update. What we can do is make the firm the most citable candidate in its niche and track how often it actually appears.

Does AI search cannibalise our website traffic?

It reduces informational clicks and concentrates the remaining ones. The visits that still arrive tend to be further down the decision, so enquiry rate per visit often rises even where sessions fall.

Is this different from normal SEO?

It overlaps heavily but not entirely. Clean technical foundations help both. Quotability, entity consistency and third-party corroboration matter far more for AI answers than for classic rankings.
